The Oligarchs Among Us

Verfassungsblog: Ass.-Prof. Dr. Lorin Wagner

It is no secret that Russian oligarchs have not only been collecting fancy toys but also various golden passports, that not only have allowed them to make them feel like home in the European Union, but also to be a part of “us”. And since the spotlight is already shifting towards how it is that some of these Russian oligarchs are indeed “our” very own oligarchs, there will be questions of what it is that validates the legal status of nationality actually. It is an old question to be fair, but the apparent answer of the day that nationality is what any State makes of it is therefore no less unconvincing and should lead to some soul searching.

Fury and Surprise - Lorin-Johannes Wagner on Commission vs. Malta and its Discontents

The Court of Justice’s judgment in Commission v Malta has created quite some upheaval: The gasping and panting has been clearly discernible in the blogsphere in the wake of the ECJ’s judgment against Malta’s golden passport scheme. Citizenship specialist Lorin-Johannes Wagner dissects the dogmas and myths of the discontent reactions to ECJ’s judgment against Malta in his article "Fury and Surprise Anchored in Dogmas and Myths" (Verfassungsblog.de). Citizenship for sale?
